Answer the following questions in 30-40 words:
Q1. What are the two popular views in the society regarding the
destruction of the world?
Ans. The poem deals with the age-old belief about how the world will come to an end. Some believe that the world will end in fire but to others, it will end in ice. It is shown in the poem that each of them has potential energy to bring about the destruction of the world
Q2. What do you think would be enough to destroy the world?
Ans. Our unending desires and hatred would be enough to destroy the world. According to the poet, 'fire' represents "desire' and 'ice' represents 'hatred'. Desires like fire spread rapidly and engulf one's whole life. Similarly, 'hatred' slowly fills one's life with poison. This way both fire and ice have the power to destroy the world.
Q3. How has the poet brought out the two contrasting ideas in the poem?
Ans. Fire is compared with the unending desires of human beings. 'Desire' propels us in hot pursuit of something. 'Hatred' makes us cold towards other's feelings. The coldness of ice can numb our senses. Similarly, the coldness of our hearts can numb our kindness. That is why 'hatred' has been compared with ice.
Q4 What do people think about the end of the world? Who does the poet side with and why?
Ans. People are divided over the cause of the probable end of this world. Some people think that 'fire' symbolised by never ending passions and desires of human being will destroy this world. Others believe that 'ice' symbolised by cold indifference and hatred could be the cause of destruction too. The poet favours those who believe that 'fire' will result in the destruction of the world on the basis of his experience, he knows that excessive desire will destroy the world.

FIRE-
The poem "Fire and Ice" by Robert Frost is a metaphor for human perceptions of desires and hatred. The fire symbolizes burning desires, lust, greed cruelty. Some scientists believe that it is the fire that will be responsible for the destruction of the world. They believe that someday, the earth will burst and there will be huge explosions of fire that will burn the world and hence everything will be destroyed. It is the desire for power that led to the deadliest wars, and battles and cost an uncountable loss of humans.
ICE- The ice symbolizes cold feeling, hatred, and jealousy that remains in the mind of people.Poet says that ice is also sufficient for destruction as if people will hate everyone around them.
