He was a poet, translator and playwright. He published works on both classical and modern variants of literature. His notable works are Three Hundred Ramayans, The Striders and Relations etc. The range of his themes and genres is wide. His poems are remembered as deep works of originality, sophistication and moving artistry. He argued strongly in favour of using local, non-standard dialects for creative expression. The government recognised his contribution by conferring on him the Sahitya Akademi Award posthumously in 1999 for his collection of poems, The Collected Poems.
