Laws of the Kingdom

It is an interesting story with a message that we should not fall into the trap of short-term benefits rather we should have a broad vision of life. This message has been given by narrating a tale of fools. In a kingdom, the king and his ministers were stupid. They wanted to show that they were different from others. To fulfil this whim, they decided to change night into day and the other way round. The people were compelled to do all their work like ploughing the fields or doing businesses at night and sleep during the day. Those who dared to disobey were warned with death penalty. Therefore, everyone followed this nonsense practice without protest.

The Guru and His Disciple in the City

One day, a guru and his disciple came to this kingdom. They were surprised to find the whole kingdom asleep during the daytime and working at night. Being very hungry, the two went to a grocery shop. They were amazed to find that everything cost the same - a single duddu. They were very happy to find everything so cheap. But the guru being wise could sense the danger in staying there. He told his disciple that the behaviour of the fools was unpredictable and it was not safe to stay there for long. He decided to leave the place at once. But the disciple decided to stay back as everything was very cheap there.

Death of the Thief and the Judgement

One day, a thief broke into a rich merchant's house by making a hole in the wall. As he was leaving with his loot, the wall of the house fell on him and he died. The thief's brother complained to the king against the merchant and appealed to punish him as the wall of his house killed his brother. The foolish king summoned the merchant. The king told the merchant that he would be punished for murdering the burglar. The merchant escaped punishment by putting the blame on the bricklayer who built a weak wall. Now, the bricklayer was ordered to be punished. The bricklayer put the blame on a dancing girl. He told the king that he got distracted by her jingling anklets when she went up and down the street on the day when the wall was being built by him. The dancing girl blamed the goldsmith as he had delayed her order due to which she had to walk up and down the street many times. The goldsmith defended himself by saying that he could not complete the dancing girl's order in time because of a wedding at the rich merchant's house. He had to first finish making ornaments for him. This rich merchant was the father of the person on whom the blame was put first. So the rich merchant was called again. He told the king that he was innocent as the jewellery was ordered by his now-deceased father. But the foolish king told the merchant that he had inherited his father's wealth as well as his sins. Hence, he must be hanged for killing the burglar.

Guru Saved the Pupil

The king ordered a new stake for the execution but the merchant was found to be too thin for the new stake. So, it was decided to search for a person who could fit the stake. The disciple, who had become plump after eating lots of food for days, was found perfect to fit the stake. He raised a hue and cry that he was a sanyasi and did nothing wrong. But the king's men did not pay any heed to his cries. While waiting to be executed, he prayed to his guru for help.

The guru possessed magical powers and understood everything. He arrived without delay to save his disciple. He first scolded the disciple and then said something in his ears. Then appreciating the king for his wisdom, the guru requested him to put him to death in place of his disciple. The disciple at once understood the guru's move and pleaded that he should be put to death before his guru. Their behaviour perplexed the king. He asked the guru to explain the reason behind this strange desire. The guru sought the promise of the king that if he told him the reason, he would kill him earlier than his disciple. The king promised him the same. The guru told him that the stake was the stake of the God of justice. It was new and no criminal had ever been hanged on it. Hence, whosoever dies first would be reborn as the king and the next person will take birth as the minister. This information made the king uncomfortable and he went into deep thought. He discussed the matter with his minister and they made a decision go to the stake themselves. At night, the king and his minister entered the prison in complete secrecy and freed the guru and his disciple. Then they disguised themselves as the two and were executed as per their strict orders. When their bodies were taken down, people were shocked to find their real identities. The entire city mourned all night. They were confused as who would rule the kingdom now. After much deliberation, they finally went to the guru and requested him and his disciple to be their king and minister. The disciple accepted immediately but the guru agreed on the condition that they would change the old laws. The people welcomed their decree and from then, everything normal started to happen there.
