Class 10 Eng(First Flight ) P-11 Anne Gregory

Anne Gragory                 by William Butler Yeats         Theme of the PoemFor Anne Gregory”

Ans: The poem “For Anne Gregory” focuses on the idea of true love. Anne Gregory is a beautiful girl and everyone loves her for her beauty. However, Anne Gregory doesn't want this kind of love for herself. The poem expresses the speaker's adoration for Anne Gregory, and he explains to Anne, the difference between inner beauty and external beauty.    Central idea

“For Anne Gregory"?                              Ans. The central idea of the poem is that young people often love appearances and not the real person. Everyone wants that he or she should be loved for what he or she actually is, not how he or she looks. The poet feels that only God can love a person for what he/she actually is. The poet wants to convey the message that we should look beyond a person's looks to know and love him/her.          Annotations

1-Despair - hopelessness           2-Ramparts - lock of hair.                    3-Text - written in religious book                   Question and answer

Q1 .What does the young man mean by "great honey coloured/Ramparts at your ear?" Why does he say the young men are "thrown into despair" by them?                                        Ans. Honey-coloured hair/Ramparts  can make anybody fall in love with her. He says that her beauty can have any man's attention but they may never be able to look beyond her beauty. No one can love Anne for who she is, her character and her innerself, but for her beauty only. One can only love her for her beautiful hair and her outer appearance.

Q2. What colour is the young woman's hair? What does she say she can change it to? Why would she want to do so?         Ans. The colour of young woman's hair is yellow like gold. She says that she can change it to brown, or black or carrot. She wanted to do so to prove that her lover loves her for herself and not for her hair Even after changing her hair colour, her lover will love her as usual.

Q3. Objects have qualities which make them desirable to others. Can you think of some  objects (a car, a phone, a dress...) and say what qualities make one object more desirable than another? Imagine you were trying to sell an object: what qualities would you emphasise?                               Ans. There is no doubt in it that objects have qualities which make them more desirable to others. Every object has its own special quality that attracts us towards it. But only outer appearance is not enough. Many times we find that the things which attracts us has no quality in them and within a very short time they become useless for us. So when we are attracted by something like car, phone, dress, etc. We must also analyse its internal quality. We have a proverb that 'All that glitters is not gold'. So we must also consider about the qualities of an object along with its appearance.

Q4 Between whom does the conversation in the poem take place?                                       Ans. The conversation in the poem takes place between a speaker, who could be the poet himself, or Anne's lover or friend and Anne Gregory herself. The other speaker believes that young men love Anne for her external beauty but Anne says that external beauty is not real and young men should love her for herself.                                        Q5. Why do young men love Anne for her hair and not for herself alone?

Ans. Anne Gregory is so beautiful that no man can ignore her external beauty. They don't look inside her real nature. Her beautiful external features stop men from knowing her as a real person. This is what that makes the speaker say that young men love Anne for her hair and not for herself alone.                                         Q6. What was not liked by the young men?

Ans.  The young men do not love the real person but love appearances. Everyone wants one should be loved for his actual personality and not for how he/she looks. The young men do not like grey or yellow hair and they do not care for inner beauty.
