Ch-6 THE MAKING Of A SCIENTIST
By Robert W Peterson
Richard Ebright
He was a man of science, but he also had a knack for sports and other extracurricular activities. Ebright showed a keen interest in science from a young age, especially in the area of molecular biology. In grade eight, he conducted an experiment to identify the virus that caused the deaths of monarch butterflies.
Richard Ebright was a multi-faceted and versatile personality. He was not only man with scientific mind, but also had a panache for sports and other-co-curricular activities such as debates, declamations, etc.
His mother encouraged him to take interest in collecting butterflies, rocks, fossils, coins; astronomy, photography, mountaineering, etc.
Since his childhood, he earned top grades in school. At the age of seven he started participating in science fairs. Science attracted him the most; in eighth grade he did an experiment to find the cause of viral disease that killed a large number of monarch butterflies. This experiment won him a prize.
Then he did many experiment such as finding out why Viceroys butterflies resembled monarch butterflies, discovery of an unknown insect hormone, growing cells from a monarch's wings, discovering the chemical structure of the hormone, and the role of DNA.
Message
Ebright had a strong sense of curiosity as a child, which ultimately inspired him to pursue a career in science. The path Ebright took to become a renowned scientist leaves a lasting impression on us.the story tells us about how he got interested in the field of science and he got privilege in the latter years with his hard work, love and dedication towards the world of science.with perseverance, dedication and hard work any dream is achievable.
Theme
The chapter inspires you to pursue your dreams. As a child Ebright was extremely curious, in fact, this inquisitiveness only drove him to become a scientist.
Question answer
Q1How did a book become a turning point in Richard Ebright's life?
Ans. The book 'The Travels of Monarch X' opened the world of science for Richard. After reading it he became interested in tracking the migration of butterflies. This interest led to his other projects and experiments.
Q2. How did his mother help him?
Ans. Richard's mother proved to be a great help. She took him on trips and bought scientific equipment for him. She spent all her time in setting up challenges for him. This helped him to learn a lot. She presented him the book 'The Travels of Monarch X'. The book changes Richard's life forever.
Q3.What lesson does Ebright learn when he does not win anything at a science fair?
Ans. Ebright exhibited slides of frog tissues at a science fair. He did not get any prize. He learnt an important lesson that science is not just about display. It is about projects and experiments. He began conducting experiments from that day onwards.
Q4. What experiments and projects does he then undertake?
Ans. He undertook many projects and experiments. He worked on viceroy butterflies to show that they copied monarch butterflies. He studied bright spots on the monarch pupa and discovered a new hormone. Also, he found out how cells read their DNA.
Q5.What are the qualities that go into the making of a scientist?
Ans. There are three essential qualities that make a scientist. The first is a first rate mind. Next is the presence of curiosity. Last but not the least, it is the will to do the best and win.
Q6. How can one become a scientist, an economist, a historian....? Does it simply involve reading many books on the subject? Does it involve observing, thinking and doing experiments?
Ans. Reading many books on a subject is not enough. One must develop the skill of observation and thinking Experiments need to be done. One needs to have curiosity to explore and find new things. Above all, one must work hard and not get upset by failures.
Q7. You must have read about cells and DNA in your science books. Discuss Richard Ebright's work in the light of what you have studied. If you get an opportunity to work like Richard Ebright on projects and experiments, which field would you like to work on and why?
Ans. DNA carry the blue print of life and heredity. They pass information from one generation to the other.
If I get an opportunity to work like Richard Ebright, I would choose to study about diseases. By studying the DNA, I may find ways and means to cure many illnesses.
Q8.Why did Richard Ebright raise a flock of butterflies?
Answer:
At the end of the book, "The travels of Monarch X', readers were invited to help study butterfly migrations. They were asked to tag butterflies for research by Dr Frederick A. Urquhart. The butterfly collecting season around reading lasts six weeks in late summery. If Ebright went to chase them one by one, he could not catch very many. So he decided to raise a flock of butterflies.
Q9.Why did Richard Ebright give up tagging butterflies?
Answer:
Richard Ebright lost interest in tagging butterflies as it was tedious and there was not much feedback. He could recapture only two butterflies in all the time he did it and they were not more than seventy five miles away from where he lived.
Q10.Why did viceroy butterflies copy monarchs?
Answer:
Viceroy butterflies copied monarchs because monarchs do not taste good to birds. Viceroy butterflies on the other hand taste good to birds. So, the more they look similar to monarchs, the less likely they are to become a bird's prey. Thus they protect themselves.
Q11. What were the hobbies of Ebright in his childhood?
Ans. Ebright's hobby was collecting things. Ebright was fascinated by butterflies. He started collecting butterflies in kindergarten. He also collected rocks, fossils and coins. He also became a star-gazer and an eager astronomer
