X.Eng.P-4 How to Tell Wild Animal Q/A

How To Tell Wild Animals

           By Carolyn Wells

         A Brief Summary

This is a humorous Poem that suggests some risky ways to identify wild animals .This poem presents some qualities of lion, tiger, leopard, bear, crocodile, Hyena and chameleon .If we go to any forest in the East if a huge terrible animal comes to us and it roars loudly and we feel dying,it is Asian lion, large tawny beast with fearful roars.

While wondering and roaming in a jungle if a wild animal with black stripes on yellow hide welcomes you and eats you simply you think it is a Bengal tiger, When strolling if you come across a wild animal with black spots on his skin, you should think it is leopard. If a wild animal meets and hugs and tightly embraces to death it is wild bear. A crocodile always sheds tears while eating its victims and a Hyena always looks smiling. An original chameleon is like a lizard. It doesn't have ears or wings. Chameleon always changes its color according to its surroundings.

Textual Question answer

Q1.

Question 1.
Does ‘Dying’ really rhyme with ‘lion’ ? Can you say it in such a way that it does?
Answer:
No, ‘Dyin’ does not rhyme with ‘lion’. If we change the pronunciation of lion by speaking it as ‘lying’ then it may rhyme with the word ‘dyin’.

Question 2.
How does the poet suggest that you identify the lion and the tiger? When can you do so according to him?
Answer:
A lion is a large and tawny beast. A Bengal Tiger has black stripes on its yellow coat. A lion roars when it falls upon its prey, while a tiger attacks silently. We can identify the two while roaming in the jungle

Q 3.Do you think the words ‘lept’ and ‘lep’ in the third stanza are spelt correctly? Why does the poet spell them like this?

Answer:The words ‘lept’ and ‘lep’ are not spelt correctly. The poet has spelt them like this in order to maintain the rhythm of the poem. The correct spelling of the words, ‘lept’ is leapt and ‘lep’ is leap. The poet has intentionally spelt them incorrectly to create a sense of humour.A poet has poetic lisence to use such words.

Q4.Do you know what a ‘bearhug’ is? It’s a friendly and strong hug-such as bears are thought to give, as they attack you! Again, hyenas are thought to laugh and crocodiles to weep (‘crocodile tears’) as they swallow their victims. Are there similar expressions and popular ideas about wild animals in your own language (s)?

Answer: A bearhug is when the bear hugs his prey tightly with both hands and presses him to death. There are indeed similar expressions and popular ideas about wild animals in every language. For example, in Hindi, we say ‘Magarmach ke aansu aaana’ (Crocodile tears) ‘Haathi ke daant dikhane ke aur, khane ke aur’, ‘Ab pachtaye hot kya jab chidiya chug gai khet’, ‘Girgit ke tarah rang badalna

Question 5.Look at the line ‘A novice might nonplus.” How would you write this ‘correctly’? Why is the poet’s ‘incorrect’ line better in the poem?

Ans.The line “A novice might nonplus” can be written correctly as “A novice might be nonplussed”. However, the poet’s incorrect line is better in the poem as it maintains the rhyme scheme of the poem. By writing it incorrectly, ‘nonplus’ rhymes with ‘thus’.A poet has poetic lisence to use such words.               Q.6. What does the poet say about the Asian Lion in this poem?                       Ans. The Asian Lion is a large beast. He is brownish- yellow in colour. His roar is very loud and terrifying. This makes one almost die due to great fear. He is found in the forest in the eastern countries of Asia. That's why he is called 'Asian Lion'.

Q.7. How does the 'Bengal Tiger' look? What is so distinct about him?

Ans. The Bengal Tiger roams in the forest freely. He is the king of animals and looks noble. He has black stripes on a yellow background. When this tiger notices someone he tries to eat him. He is so terrifying with his jaw and teeth.

Q.8. What do you learn about the leopard from this poem ?

Ans. A leopard has spots on his skin. These are black in colour on his yellow skin. He is a great runner. As soon as he sees someone, he leaps over him at once. He attacks on him and starts eating. He is so terrifying and powerful.

Q9. How does the poet describe the bear? Ans. The poet suggests that the bear can enter a human colony also. That is why, you can encounter a bear even in your yard. As soon as the bear comes near a human being, he embraces him. This embrace appears loving. But in fact it can be fatal.                         Q.10. Why does the poet say that a bear's hug may confuse a novice ?

Ans. It is the tendency of the bear to kill his victim by embracing him. He hug the victim so tightly that he usually dies. But a novice who does not know the ways of bears, may misunderstand his hug. He may think that it is a loving embrace.

Q.11. What does the poet say about the crocodile and the hyena ?

Ans. The poet describes the crocodile and the hyena humorously. The hyena seems to be laughing. In fact, it does not laugh. Only its face appears so. On the other hand, the crocodile has tears in his eyes when it eats its victim. It appears as if he is shedding tears at the death of his victim. But this is not so.
