A Brief Note Of The  Poem

While travelling through a forest on an autumn day, the poet reached a point where the path diverged into two roads. He could not travel both the roads at the same time. He stood there for a long time in a dilemma as he couldn't choose which road to travel. He looked at one of the roads as far as he could. Both the roads looked equally exciting. That morning, both the roads were covered with leaves which meant no one had travelled upon them. However, the poet chose the second road as it seemed to be less travelled. He left the first road thinking that he would travel by it some other day despite being aware of the fact that one road leads to another, and he may never get a chance of coming back.

The poet imagines that someday, after ages, he would be telling about his decision with a sigh. He would recall how he had chosen to travel the less frequented road, making all the difference.

Stanza-1

“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveller, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Word-meanings: diverged - separate, yellow wood - forest in autumn season, undergrowth - wild, bushes

Paraphrase: During the autumn season, the poet was going through a forest. He reached a point from where a road diverged in two directions. He could not travel both the roads at the same time. The poet stood there and thought for a long time. He looked down at one of the roads as far as he could. He saw it up to the point where the road bent behind the bushes

Stanza-2.

“Then took the other, just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear, Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same.”

Word-meanings: just as fair-as good as the first one, better claim-better option, wanted wear-not been used

Paraphrase: The poet found both the roads equally fair. He, however, felt that the other roads that promises a better claim because not many people had walked upon this road. So he took the road but later realised that both the roads have been equally worn.

     Stanza-3

And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come.

Word-meanings: trodden black-turned black by being trampled upon

Paraphrase: In the morning, both the roads were covered with leaves. No traveller had walked upon them. Neither of them had been made black by being trodden upon. The poet decided to go by the second road and kept the first one for another day. However, the poet knew that there was little chance of his coming back, since one road leads to another,

Stanza -4

“I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence; Two roads diverged in a wood, and I- I took the one less travelled by, And that has made all the difference.”

Paraphrase: The poet imagines a time many ages hence, when he will recall how he had chosen one of the two roads which diverged in a forest. He will recall how he had decided to travel the less-frequented road and how his choice had made all the difference.

Short Answer Type Questions

Q1. Discuss the relevance of the title 'The Road Not Taken.

Ans. The title the poem 'The Road Not Taken' is relevant because here the road symbolises the choices that one has to make in life. The poet chose the other road knowing that he could never come back and choose the first road. He, however, regrets for what he had not chosen. Therefore, the title signifies opportunities that are not taken upon in life.

Q2. Why is the poet doubtful?

Ans. The poet is doubtful about whether he would ever come back to travel the other road since he knows that one road leads to another. It is very difficult for an adventurous traveller like poet to come back from a path because while travelling, he would find other attractive roads or opportunities. So, his coming back would be doubtful.

Q3. What was the poet's impact of choice on the poet's life?

Ans. The poet had thought over his decision carefully. The road that the poet took shaped his life in a particular manner. It seemed he regrets his choice. He knew that his life would have turned out differently if he had taken the other road.

Q4. Describe the two roads that the poet finds. Which road did the poet choose?

Ans. The poet finds a path that diverges into two roads in a yellow wood. Both the roads seemed equally fair as they were grassy. However, the poet chose the other road which appeared to lay a better claim. Being adventurous, the poet was tempted to take the other road.

Q5.What does the divergence in the road signify?

Ans. The divergence in the road signifies that a person has to make difficult choices in real life. Sometimes it is very difficult to choose the right option. So, the divergence of the road is symbolic to the confusion or dilemma we face while facing a problem and making a decision

Q6. Why do you think the poet sighs in the end?

Ans. The last stanza conveys that the poet would be telling his story with a sense of regret as the choice he had made did not prove to be satisfactory. He wonders if he would have been successful if he had taken the other road as the other road might have shaped his life differently.

Q7. What message does this poem offer?

Ans. 'The Road Not Taken' tells us that life is full of choices that we have to make every now and then. We have to face the difficulty of making a choice in life. The choices we make determine our future, we cannot go back once the choice is made so we should be wise while making the choices and we should move on without any sense of regret.

Q8. What factors, should a person keep in mind while choosing the right path which can really 'make the difference"?

Ans. The poet says that one often faces confusion while making the appropriate choice. However, one should think carefully over the alternatives available as the choice we make impacts our future. We should be wise enough to know about the risks involved, interests, etc.
