Ans. Iswaran works as a cook for Mahendra. He not only cooks for him but also washes his clothes and chats with him at night. The main quality of Iswaran is that he is a master storyteller. He has amazing imagination to weave as many stories as he can In cooking, he can produce delicious dishes quickly in remote area with minimum ingredients. So he is an asset to Mahendra.
Q2. How does Iswaran describe the uprooted tree on the highway? What effect does he want to create on his listeners?
Ans. Iswaran describes the uprooted tree with theatrical effects. He gives the description while acting it out. His description is lively and imaginative. He makes the tree a bushy beast and says that it was so big that it lay across the road. He gathered courage and reached near it, only to find that it was an uprooted tree.The narration is so interesting that audience remains spell bound throughout it.
Q3. How does he narrate the story of the tusker? Does it appear to be plausible?
Ans. He narrates the story of the tusker with great confidence. He tells Mahendra that once an elephant escaped from a timber yard and caused destruction to everything that came its way. When it reached Iswaran's school, it pulled the football goal post and volleyball net. Iswaran was a student of junior class at that time. He at once took a cane from a teacher and challenged the elephant. He hit on the third toenail of the elephant and the beast shivered and collapsed. The description of the story makes it amply clear that the story isn't plausible. It is just an exaggerated tale of the bravery of a child.
Q4. Why does the narrator say that iswaran seemed to more than make up for the absence of a TV in Mahendra's living quarters?
Ans. Ishwaran is an amazing storyteller who entertains Mahendran in absence of a television. His stories are packed with adventure, horror and suspense. The way he narrates them is nothing short of theatrical. Almost every day, he tells Mahendra stories full of adventure and thrill. Though Mahendra knows that his tales are exaggerated, he enjoys them.
Q5. Mahendra calls ghosts or spirits a figment of the imagination. What happens to him on a full-moon night?
Ans. Mahendra calls ghosts or spirits a figment of the imagination. But on a full moon night, he wakes from his sleep due to sounds of low-moaning. He looks out of the window and sees a dark cloudy form holding a bundle. He believes it to be the female ghost who is clutching a foetus. He gets so scared that he starts breathing heavily. When he slowly recovers from this panic, he convinces himself that what he has seen is just a trick played by his subconscious mind.
Q6. Can you think of some other ending of the story?
Ans. Instead of departing from the place, Mahendra could have convinced himself that there are no ghosts. He could have fought his fear. When Ishwaran told him about the sounds made by the ghost the previous night, he could have asked him to stop fooling around as there are no ghosts in reality. He could have been rational and stay there.
Q7. Why did Mahendra have to move from place to place?
Ans. Mahendra was a junior supervisor who worked in a firm which offered supervisors at construction sites like factories, bridges, dams, etc. His job was to supervise the activities at the work sites. So he kept moving from place to place now and then Moreover, he was unmarried so he had lesser problems in moving from place to place than a married person.

Ans. Iswaran was different from other domestic helps because he not only cooked for Mahendra but also washed his clothes and chatted with him at night. Ans. Iswaran's style of storytelling was unique and mesmerising. He employed dramatic gestures and actions while narrating a story to make it more interesting. For instance, he described an uprooted tree as a giant bushy beast lying on the road.

Ans. According to Iswaran's narration, a mad elephant escaped from the timber yards and destroyed everything that came its way. When it reached Iswaran's school, everyone was panic-stricken. Iswaran was in junior class at that time. But without getting afraid, Iswaran took a cane from a teacher and ran down to challenge the tusker. It tried to frighten Iswaran by stamping its feet and kicking up mud. But he hit on the third toenail of the elephant and the beast shivered and collapsed.

Ans. Iswaran's story of the female ghost of a woman badly affected Mahendra. From that day, he remained tensed and fearful. Every night he looked into the darkness outside. He tried to make sure that there was no movement of ghosts in the area.

Ans. No, the ghost seen by Mahendra was not real. Mahendra tried to convince himself that it might be his overactive imagination. He was sure that figures which he saw were due to his fear. His fear in his subconscious mind made him imagine things.
Q13. When did Mahendra believe that their place of stay was really haunted?
Ans. When Mahendra saw a dark cloudy form clutching a bundle on a moonlit night, he reasoned with himself that it must have been a figment of his imagination. However, the next morning when Iswaran told him that he had come to his room after listening to moaning sounds coming from his room, Mahendra believed that the place was, indeed, haunted and he should leave the place.
