Ans. Two strange things which the guru and his disciple found were:

(a) Everything big or small had the same cost, a single duddu.

(b) People slept during the day and worked during the night.

Q2. Why does the disciple decide to stay in the Kingdom of Fools? Is it a good idea?

Ans. The disciple decides to stay in the Kingdom of Fools because everything is cheap there. He wants to stay and have lots of cheap food. It does not prove to be a good idea in the long run as it is the Kingdom of Fools. At one moment, fools prove to be beneficial but at other, they become harmful. It is due to this the disciple finds himself in trouble because of the foolish king's order.

Q3. Name all the people who are tried in the king's court, and give the reasons for their trial.

Ans. Different persons were tried in the king's court. These were: the merchant, the bricklayer, the dancing girl and the goldsmith. The reasons for their trial were also different. The merchant and the bricklayer were found guilty of not building a strong wall. The dancing girl was tried for disturbing the bricklayer. The goldsmith was found guilty of not making the ornaments on time.

Q4. Who is the real culprit according to the king? Why does he escape punishment?

Ans. As per the king, the real culprit is the rich merchant. His father had ordered the ornaments when he was alive. The merchant, being his son, inherited everything from his father, his property as well as his sins. But the merchant escapes punishment because the stake is not of his size.

Q5. What are the guru's words of wisdom? When does the disciple remember them?

Ans. The guru's words of wisdom are that nobody can predict the behaviour of fools. They can do anything at anytime. The guru says that if they can sell everything at the same price, they can take any foolish decision in future which can harm others. The disciple doesn't understand the wise words of his guru when they visit the kingdom. When he is to about be hanged for no fault of his, he remembers his guru's words of wisdom and realises his mistake.

Q6. How does the guru manage to save his disciple's life?

Ans. The guru makes a plan. They start fighting about who will die first. Seeing the king confused, the guru tells him that whoever dies first will become a king in the next birth. The person who would die second will become the minister. The king wants to remain as a king even in the next birth. So he and his minister set the two free and die at the stake in their place. The guru saves his disciple with his wisdom and planning.

Short Answer Type Questions

Q1. What advice was given by the guru to his disciple before leaving the city? What was the disciple's response?

Ans. The guru told the disciple that the place was not suitable for them. It was a kingdom of fools. Anything could happen as foolish people are unpredictable and can cause them harm in the future. But the disciple didn't pay any heed to his guru's advice and stayed back.

Q2. Whom did the merchant blame for the death of the thief?

Ans. The merchant blamed the bricklayer as he had not built the wall properly, thus causing the thief's death. He had built the wall when the rich merchant's father was alive.

Q3. How did the bricklayer save himself?

Ans. The old bricklayer pleaded that he couldn't concentrate on his work due to the jingling anklets of the dancing girl. She went up and down the street many times on that day when he was busy building the wall. Thus, he shifted the blame on the dancing girl.

Q4. Why did the king's servant arrest the disciple?

Ans. The rich merchant who was to be executed was too thin to fit the new stake. Instead of finding any other way to punish him, the foolish king decided to find a person fit for the stake. The plump disciple was found fit for the stake. So the king's men decided to execute him in place of the merchant.

Q5. What plan did the guru make to save his disciple?

Ans. The guru was very wise and saw the troubled situation his disciple had gotten into, with his magical powers. He devised a plan to save his disciple. He fooled the king by saying that the stake was of the god of justice. Whoever died on it first, would be reborn as the king and the next person would be reborn as the minister. So the foolish king and the minister executed themselves to keep their position in the next birth too.

Q6. Why did the guru and the disciple start fighting? Was it a real flight?

Ans. The guru whispered the plan to his disciple to save him. The disciple understood clearly. They started acting as per the plan. According to the plan, the guru wanted to die first and the disciple opposed it. This led to their fight. But it was a mock fight for the execution of their plan.

Q7.What message does the writer of the story 'In the Kingdom of Fools 'wish to give?

Ans

The message is that we should stay away from foolish people otherwise we would suffer. The disciple gave into the temptation of getting food items for cheap prices and stayed in the kingdom of fools whereas the Guru resisted his desires and thought wisely. He knew that the company of fools even if it seems to be beneficial, proves to be harmful in the long run as nobody can predict their behaviour. Leaving the company of fools, the guru remained in peace while the stay in the kingdom of fools brought doom to the disciple.
