Q1. What does the narrator notice one Sunday afternoon? What is his mother's reaction? What does she do?

Ans. One Sunday afternoon while sitting in the dining room doing his homework, the narrator notices smoke coming in through the ceiling. The room soon gets filled with smoke, making it impossible to see anything. The narrator and his mother run out into the front yard. Then his mother goes into the house and bring outside a small metal box containing important documents. Then she again runs into the house to bring her deceased husband's pictures and letters.


Q2. Why does he break down in tears after the fire?

Ans. After the narrator's house is completely burnt in fire, he loses his pet cat whom he dearly loves. The memory of his cat fills his mind with pain. He misses her bitterly Therefore, he breaks down in tears.


Q3. Why is the narrator deeply embarrassed the next day in school? Which words show his fear and insecurity?

Ans. The author is deeply embarrassed the next day in school. His clothes, shoes, books, backpack-everything has been burnt in the fire. So, he has no choice but to go to school in an outfit which he wore for the Sunday church and tennis shoes that he borrowed from his aunt. He looks very different from other children in the school and feels very conscious of himself. He walks around the school like a zombie. He fears being treated as an outcast and a geek. He even gets depressed at the thought of growing up and even wants to die.


Q4. The cat and the narrator are very fond of each other. How has this been shown in the story? Where was the cat after the fire? Who brings it back and how?

Ans. The cat and the narrator are very fond of each other. The narrator sorely misses his cat after it goes missing after the fire. During the fire, the cat runs a mile away in panic. A woman finds it. She finds the narrator's phone number written on its collar. But as his phone was out of order due to the fire, she tries very hard to find the narrator. Ultimately, she succeeds in uniting the cat and the narrator. The cat and the narrator both feel happy in each other's company.


Q5. What actions of the schoolmates change the narrator's understanding of life and people, and comfort him emotionally? How does his loneliness vanish and how does he start participating in life?

Ans. After the fire incident, the narrator loses everything. His schoolmates develop empathy with the narrator and bring school supplies, notebooks and different clothes for him. This act of love and kindness changes the narrator's understanding of life and people. He is overwhelmed and gets comfort emotionally. He makes many friends, and his loneliness vanishes and he starts participating in life again.


Q6. What is the meaning of "My cat was back and so was I"? Had the narrator gone anywhere? Why does he say that he is also back?

Ans. After the fire incident, the narrator loses interest in life. He feels that he has lost everything. But after the kind act of his schoolmates, he makes friends and develops a sense of security. His house starts to get rebuilt too. Finally with the recovery of his cat, he feels his life has come back to track.

Ans. The narrator felt lonely in his new school. He did not like the change because he was in the junior most class here whereas in his earlier school, he had been a head of the class at senior upper grade level. Also, all his friends had taken admission in different schools. He missed his close friends and old teachers. He went to meet his teachers of the old school as he missed them. He was finding it difficult to adjust in his new school. So he went to seek his teachers' advice. They advised him to take part in school activities.


Q2. How did the firemen react when the narrator's mother was brought out of the burnt house?

Ans. The narrator's mother had run inside the house to bring pictures and letters of her late husband. In the process, she inhaled much smoke and fainted. One of the firemen brought her out of the house. The fireman took her over to the truck and put an oxygen mask over her mouth. He assured the narrator that she would get well soon.


Q3. How did the firemen help the narrator and his mother when their house had caught fire?

Ans. The narrator's mother had gone inside the burning house when the firemen came to their rescue. The narrator was about to run behind her into the house when a fireman caught hold of him. The fireman wrapped him in a blanket and made him sit in the car. Other firemen ran into the house. Soon a fireman brought his mother out of the burning house and put an oxygen mask on her.


Q4. What damage is caused by the fire?

Ans. The fire engulfed the entire house. All belongings except photo albums, documents and some personal items that the narrator's mother had managed to take out, were destroyed in the fire. Whatever remained was destroyed by the water and chemicals used to extinguish the fire.


Q5. Why did the narrator's mother borrow money from his grandparents?

Ans. The narrator's house was destroyed in fire and all their precious belongings like the cash, bank details, credit cards, etc. had also been gutted. Even the identity cards were destroyed. They needed money for different purposes. So, his mother had to borrow money from his grandparents.


Q6. What difficulties did the narrator and his mother face after the fire incident?

Ans. Since their house was burnt down, the narrator and his mother went to the narrator's grandparent's house to spend the night. The next day, it was Monday and the narrator had to go to school wearing the clothes which he had worn to the church the morning before and shoes, borrowed from his aunt. He walked around the school like a zombie. He felt deeply conscious of himself and other people's opinion of him. His mother had to borrow money from his grandparents to buy things of necessity.

Ans. The narrator was not comfortable in his new school. But one day he found that everyone was behaving strangely. He was getting ready for his gym class when suddenly students started to gather around him. They asked him to hurry up. On getting inside the gym, he found that a big table had been set up with different things. such as, school supplies, notebooks, jeans, tops, sweatsuits, etc. His schoolmates had brought all these things for the narrator. He felt like it was Christmas. The kindness of his schoolmates overwhelmed him. He made many friends that day.

Ans. The narrator was overwhelmed when his schoolmates gifted him many things. They brought him school supplies, notebooks and different clothes. They came up to him to introduce themselves. He got many invitations to their houses and made friends. He was touched by their genuine concern for him.


Q9. Why did the narrator try to run after his mother into the burning house? Who stopped him and why?

Ans. The narrator tried to run after his mother into the burning house because he was scared that she might get burnt in the fire. He was afraid of losing her. A fireman caught hold of his hand to stop him from running after her. The narrator was being rash and stupid. He might not have saved her life but he would have definitely risked his own.


Q10. Why did the narrator keep visiting the remains of his house?

Ans. The narrator was shocked to lose his cat in the fire. He loved her very much. He kept visiting the remains of his house because he hoped to find her there. He perhaps
