CHARACTER SKETCH OF SHYLOCK
Shylock is the antagonist and a tragic character in William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. A Jewish merchant living in a Christian city, He is very greedy, selfish, Cunning and money minded character. He hated Antony Shylock and is portrayed as a dynamic and clever character. He is cruel, malicious and revengeful.
A Wise and Intelligent Man:- Shylock is very wise and intelligent man. He always shows his wisdom and fore sightedness in his decision. He is a so wise that he puts his case in the trial scene in a logical way like a lawyer. Thus the whole scene represents with an intelligent. He is seen as a vindictive and greedy character that seeks for revenge against Antonio. The trial scene in Act 4 sees Shylock at his most ruthless, as he insists on the literal “pound of flesh” and shows no mercy for Antonio's plea for mercy.
Shylock is a devout Jew, having a passion for his race and religion. He is a champion of his race and speaks eloquently about the injustices suffered by the Jews. He is a devout practitioner of his religion. The centuries of oppression of his Jewish race,by the Christians has embittered his soul.
Why is Shylock jealous?
He has a bias against Antonio as a Christian and hates him even more for Antonio's practice of lending money without interest, undermining Shylock's usury business. Shylock wants revenge for years of Antonio's mistreatment. Antonio hates people of the Jewish faith and always speaks badly about Shylock's merchant deals.Again, Shylock's selfish, greedy, and dark character comes through as he wishes for the return of his daughter dead or alive so he could get his jewels back.
