THE ADDRESS (Marga Minco) BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE STORY During World War II, the Germans (the Nazis under Hitler) invaded Holland where 90 percent of the people were Jews. Many of the Jews fled in fear to other countries. Thousands were imprisoned in concentration camps. A woman and her little daughter had also to leave their home. The woman left all her things with a woman known to her. After some time, the woman died. However, her daughter remembered the place where she used to live with her mother. Long after the war, she came to the town where she used to live with her mother. She went to meet the woman with whom her mother had left all her things. But the woman refused to recognize her because she didn't want to return the things she had taken. In this story, the daughter describes how she felt during that visit and later on another visit. The Tiger King  INTRODUCTION The story 'The Tiger King' is a satire on the conceit of those in power. The Maharaja of Pratibandapuram is the hero of the story. When he was born, astrologers had foretold that he should beware of the tiger. Crown prince Jung Jung Bahadur shouted "Let tigers beware!" The royal prince started hunting tigers when his state came into his hands after he reached the age of twenty. He killed all the seventy tigers of his state. Then he got married to a princess whose state had a large tiger population. Ninety-nine tiger skins adorned the walls of the Pratibandapuram palace. The hunt of the hundredth tiger proved tricky and troublesome. The tiger fainted from shock on hearing the sound of the bullet. The king's bullet missed it. THE THIRD LEVEL BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE STORY This story moves at two different levels in space and time. It moves simultaneously between the modern times and the period of 1890-something. The main character in the story is Charley who is thirty-one years old. He lives around New York Central and often travels to his work through the subway of Grand Central Station. He knows of only two levels there from where the trains leave for different destinations. All the timetables and railway officials also mention these two levels only. But one day, Charley discovers a third level which is quite different from the first two levels. Here, the people are dressed in the old style of 1890's. Here, the tickets have to be bought using the currency of that very period. The locomotives are also of the old style. From here, one can travel to anywhere in the United States. The Summer of the Beautiful White Horse  Summary Aram and Mourad were two poor boys who belonged to the Armenian Garoghlanian family who were known for their honesty since the eleventh century. One early morning when Aram was asleep and was enjoying pleasant dreams, his cousin Mourad knocked to his window with a beautiful white horse. Aram could not believe it and was thinking if  it was a dream. But since there was a little light outside, he knew this for sure that the horse was real.
