Q1.Who was Joe Morgan? Why was he waiting for Dr Andrew?


Ans. Joe Morgan was a driller in the mining town of Blaenelly. That night he was waiting for Dr Andrew because he wanted to take him his home to help his wife who was expecting their first child after twenty years of their marriage. Joe and everyone else in the family wanted the things to be smooth.


Q.2. Why did Joe Morgan not go in when Dr Andrew made his way into the home?


Ans. Joe was a simple driller who was very anxious that night as his wife Susan was expecting their first baby after so many years of their marriage. He had already brought Dr Andrew to help Susan in the safe and smooth delivery. When the doctor went in the house to examine Joe Morgan's wife, Joe kept waiting outside. He did not have the courage to see his beloved wife in pain. Besides, he had full faith in doctor and perhaps in God too. So, he decided to stay out and wait.


Q3.What did Dr Andrew notice when he entered Mr Morgan's house?


Ans. When Dr Andrew entered Mr Morgan's house, he found a narrow stair moving up to a small bedroom. The room was poorly furnished and was lit up by an oil lamp. Mrs Morgan's mother was waiting beside the patient. An elderly midwife was also present there.


Q.4. Dr Andrew was quite lost in his thoughts when he accompanied Joe to his house. Why?

Ans. It had been quite an unfortunate day for Dr Andrew. He was facing some problems in his personal life and his relationship with his girlfriend had reached an unpleasant note. That day his meeting with her was quite disappointing and his mind was all occupied by these thoughts. That's why we find him lost in his own thoughts while going to Joe Morgan's house. He was feeling very lethargic and low too.


Q5.What for did Susan's mother offer to make a cup of tea for Dr Manson?


Ans. Susan's mother was apprehensive. She feared that Dr Manson would leave upon an excuse and would not return seeing that the case was complicated. So she offered a cup of tea to keep the doctor at home.


Q.6. Describe Mrs Morgan's mother.

Ans. Mrs Morgan's mother was an old lady in her seventies. Her eyes could tell Dr Andrew that she had gained a lot of experiences in life. Although she was quite worried about her daughter but she kept her calm. She was eagerly waiting for her grandchild but she did not panic in the critical period.


Q.7. What was Andrew thinking when he was sitting by the kitchen fire? 

Ans. Sitting by the kitchen fire, Andrew's mind was occupied with the thoughts of what had happened in the evening. He was sad about his disappointing meeting with his girlfriend Christine. Meanwhile, his thoughts turned Bramwell, Edward Page and Denny who were very unhappy because of their marriages. His own experience with his beloved Christine made him draw the conclusion that marriage was an idyllic state.


Q.8. What was the wish of Susan Morgan which Mrs Morgan's mother conveyed to the doctor?


Ans. Mrs Morgan's mother told the doctor that everyone in the family was set upon the baby to be born. Her daughter Susan was so possessive about it that she had wished not to be. administered chloroform as it could harm the baby. Dr Andrew assured her that chloroform was safe and it would not harm the child.


Q.9. What dilemma did Andrew face?


Ans. When Dr Andrew saw the still born baby, he was faced with the dilemma as to whom he should save first. Mrs Morgan's pulse was sinking and the still born baby too needed his attention. He could not decide what he should do. Instinctively he gave the child to the nurse and turned his attention towards the mother.

Q10.What did Andrew do to save the mother?


Ans. Andrew quickly smashed a glass ampule and injected the medicine into the pulse less body of Mrs Susan Morgan. Then he tried his best to revive her heart. When he found that her heart had strengthened, he turned his attention to the lifeless child.


Q11. What treatment was given by the doctor to resuscitate the child?

Ans. The baby's blanched skin reminded Dr Andrew of a similar case he had seen in Samaritan. He also remembered the treatment given by his senior doctors. Without wasting a moment, he asked the nurse to bring two basins along with hot and cold water. Then like a juggler he plunged the baby in cold and hot water alternatively. Unfortunately this didn't work. Then he pressed the tiny chest of the baby and rubbed it with a towel. This technique worked and the baby

showed the signs of survival. 


Q.12. How did the lifeless baby show first signs of life?


Ans. At first, the child's chest gave a short convulsive heave. It started gasping deeper and deeper as Andrew pressed the chest. Finally, a bubble of mucus came out of one tiny nostril. The blanched skin slowly began turning pink. Then came the child's cry-a sure sign of life.


Q.13. How did the midwife and Mrs Morgan's mother react when the child was resuscitated?


Ans. When the child came to life, the two women the midwife and Mrs Morgan's mother were highly elated. The midwife sobbed as she said. "Dear father in heaven.... It's come - It's come alive". Mrs Morgan's mother expressed her gratitude to Almighty God by praying


Q.14. Why did midwife say, "For mercy's sake,Doctor"?


Ans. Dr Andrew had been trying different methods to resuscitate the child. At times he was frustrated too and once he had almost dropped the child. When the midwife saw all this, she uttered those words.


Q15. Give the character sketch of Andrew Manson.

 Ans. Andrew Manson was a dedicated doctor who believed in saving the life of his patients. He went beyond the normal expectations from a doctor to save the wife and the baby of Joe Morgan. He used unconventional methods to save the baby's life by immersing him alternatively in steaming and icy waters. He did not give up till he had saved both the mother and the child.
