Q1. What is Johnsy's illness? What can cure her, the medicine or the willingness to live?

Ans. Johnsy suffers from pneumonia. She is under treatment but the doctor says that no medicine can help her as she has lost the willingness to live. She is certain that she will die as the last leaf of the creeper falls. So, her illness is more psychological than physical. Hence no medicine can help her. It is only her will to live that can cure her.


Q2. Do you think the feeling of depression Johnsy has is common among teenagers?

Ans. No generalization can be made regarding this. Some teenagers may be very imaginative like Johnsy. If a thing once gets into their mind, it becomes difficult to get rid of it. Some depressed or introvert teenagers may have suicidal tendencies or get obsessed with the idea of suicide and death


Q3. Behrman has a dream. What is it? Does it come true?

Ans. Behrman's dream is to paint a masterpiece. Ultimately he becomes successful in painting one. He paints an ivy leaf. This painting proves to be a masterpiece. Even Johnsy, who is herself an artist, couldn't tell that it is not a real leaf. Moreover, it saves her life also.


Q4. What is Behrman's masterpiece? What makes Sue say so?

Ans. Behrman paints an ivy leaf on a creeper on the wall. It looks so real that nobody could distinguish it from the real leaf Johnsy takes it to be a real leaf and regains her will to live. Being an artist herself Johnsy is not able to distinguish the leaf. That is why Sue calls it a masterpiece.

Ans. Johnsy was suffering from pneumonia, it was autumn season and the ivy creeper leaves were falling gradually. This depressed Johnsy She started associating her falling health with the falling of leaves. She imagined that she would die when the last leaf fell

Ans. Johnsy was ill and depressed. She imagined that she would die when the last leaf fell from the creeper. The doctor said that her life could only be saved if she regained her will to live. It could happen by reviving her interest in things around her.

Ans. Sue started talking to Johnsy about the things she was interested in. She talked to her about clothes and fashions. She also moved her drawing-board to Johnsy's room and whistled as she painted. All this was done to divert Johnsy's mind off her illness.


Q4. How did Sue nurse Johnsy during her illness?

Ans. Sue took great care of Johnsy during her illness. She took care of all her needs. She would get her hot soup from time to time. She would sit by her side and would try to indulge her in talking. She called the doctor to tend to Johnsy and even sought help from their neighbour Behrman.


Q5. Why did Johnsy start counting backwards while looking out of the window?

Ans. Johnsy looked out of the window and started counting backwards noticing the number of leaves left on the ivy creeper. She developed a weird idea that she would die when the last leaf fell.


Q6. Why did Sue go to meet Behrman?

Ans. Behrman was an old painter who lived in the same building as Sue and Johnsy. Sue went to him and told him about the strange fancy of Johnsy that she would die when the last leaf of the ivy creeper fell. Behrman was elderly and hence had more experience of life. Sue poured out her feeling as Behrman was her friend.


Q7. How was Johnsy's life saved?

Ans. Johnsy thought that she would die when the last leaf of the ivy creeper on the wall outside their window fell. Behrman, their painter friend went out in extreme weather to paint the leaf on the creeper. Next morning, Johnsy saw one last leaf on the ivy. She did not realise that it was not a real leaf. The leaf did not fall even in heavy rainfall and extreme wind. It encouraged Johnsy and revived her interest in life. Thus, she was saved.


Q8. How did Behrman die?


Ans. In order to save Johnsy, he painted an ivy leaf on the creeper on the wall. He went out in a cold rainy, windy night to paint the leaf and caught pneumonia. He died after two days.


Q9. Why was Sue reluctant to draw the curtains on the morning after the storm?


Ans. Sue was reluctant to draw the curtains in the morning because she was sure that the last leaf must have had fallen at night. This could make Johnsy give up all hope of surviving as she believed that she would die when the last leave fell. She didn't know that Behrman had painted the leaf last night


Q10.Write a brief character-sketch of old Behrman.

Ans. Behrman was a sixty years old painter. He always wanted to paint a masterpiece. But it had remained a dream.

He lived on the ground floor in the same building where Sue and Johnsy lived. He was very kind and compassionate at heart. When Sue told him about the strange idea of Johnsy that she would die when the last leaf of the ivy creeper fell, he decided to help her. By then only one leaf was left on the creeper. In order to save Johnsy, he painted an ivy leaf on the creeper on the wall. He went out in cold, rainy, windy night to paint the leaf which ultimately proved his masterpiece. Even Johnsy, who was an artist, could not recognise that it was a painted leaf. Behrman got pneumonia as he was out in the rain at night and died after two days. So by sacrificing his life, he saved the life of Johnsy and ultimately fulfilled his dream of creating a masterpiece
