WIND
by Subramanian Bharati
Introduction
The poem wind was originally written in Tamil. This Poem highlights both the aspects
of nature constructive as well as destructive. According to the poet the wind tease troubles and makes fun of those who are weak. On the other hand, the same wind friendly to those human beings who are strong and have firm minds. In the end, the poet says that it is good to have the friendship of the wind.
SUMMARY
The poet observes that the wind breaks the shutters of the windows, scatters the papers and throws down the books lying on the shelf. He appeals to the wind to blow gently But the wind goes its own way. The wind brings the rain again. The poet thinks that the wind is very clever at making fun of those who are weak, whether humans or animals If the houses, rafters, doors and wood are weak and not built strongly, they crumble and get crushed by the wind. The wind god crushes all the weaklings. It does not listen to those who are weak in body, spirit and mind.
As the wind won't listen to the weaklings, the poet tells us to build strong homes and join the doors firmly. We ought to make our bodies solid and strong. We have to make our hearts firm. If we are able to do so, the wind will be quite friendly with us. Though the wind blows out weak fires, it provides more strength to the strong fires. The poet says in the end that the friendship of the wind is good and we praise it everyday.

Q1.How does the wind become the cause of rain?
Ans. The strong wind blows violently and brings clouds with it from distant lands. The vapour-laden clouds precipitate and cause rainfall.
Q2. Why should people build strong houses?
Ans. People should build strong houses so that they may not be damaged by the fierce wind which causes destruction to the frail houses, doors and beams. Strongly built houses can endure the violent blows of the wind without being damaged. ?
Q3. Does the wind god do what we tell him? Why/Why not
Ans. The wind god is powerful. He doesn't do what we tell him to do. Our requests don't have any effect on him. He is mighty and sweeps away all weak objects with him. He loves strength and befriends those who have strong hearts.
Q4. What does the wind symbolise?
Ans. The wind symbolises the obstacles and hardships that one has to face in life. The wind god is a symbol of power and might. He hates weak people and pokes fun at them. He befriends only the strong. Similarly, only the strong can survive the hardships of life and come out even stronger.
Q5.. What does the poet ask us to do?
Ans. The poet wants us to realise the ways of the world by giving the example of the powerful wind god. He advises us to build strong homes. The door must be closed firmly. Weak hearts will never succeed but the strong would survive. The powerful wind god only loves strength and steadfastness.
Q6. Why and how does the wind blow out weak fires? What roars and flourishes?
Ans. The god of wind is against the weak. It destroys the weak but adds power to the strong. The weak fire gets extinguished by the wind while it adds greater intensity to the flames of the strong fire, making it roar and flourish.
Q7.. Do you think the title 'Wind' is apt and relevant for the poem?
Ans. The title of any literary piece must be short, entertaining and indicate the central idea of the poem. The title makes it very clear that it is a poem of nature and can reveal either constructive or destructive power of wind. Wind in this poem symbolises the adversities of life. It is a raw power of nature which can bring destruction. Only the strong can survive its brutal force. So, the title conveys the central idea of the poem and is quite appropriate.
Q8Whom does the wind disturb?
Ans. The wind disturbs only the weak, frail and fickle minded people. The wind here metaphorically means the challenges and adversities of life. The people who are weak willed, emotionally sensitive and weak bodied are disturbed by adversities. Once, they overcome these weaknesses, the adversities would not frighten them rather make them even stronger than before.
Q9 What does the wind do with the books?
Ans. The wind tears the pages of the books and throws them down from the book shelf. The strong wind scatters the papers on the floor.
Q10. Why does the poet request the wind to come softly?
Ans. The poet requests the wind to come softly so that there must not be any destruction on the earth. The strong wind damages the shutters of the windows, scatters the papers and tears the pages of the books. So, the poet pleads the wind to be gentle.
Q11. be the theme of the poem 'Wind'.
. The poem depicts the mammoth power of wind and how it has the potential of being both a destroyer and a creator. The people who are weak and fragile cannot bear its wrath, whereas people with strength can survive it and use it to their advantage. The same can be said about the adversities of life. The people who are weak-willed easily break down while people who are physically and mentally strong overpower all adversities and become stronger. Therefore, we should make ourselves strong.
Q12. What message does the poet want to convey to his readers?
Ans. The poem carries the message that one must develop mental toughness, physical strength and emotional stability in order to survive the adversities of life. If a person is frail and weak willed, he will not be able to bear the hardships of life in the same way weak buildings crumble before the mighty power of the wind. The poet thus advises us to be friends with strength and determination.
