In the evening when he returned from work, her mother would ask Kezia to take off his shoes. The girl would enter the room slowly and would stutter every time when he asked her any thing. This was because she was afraid of him.
One Sunday Afternoon

A Gift Given on Birthday
For her father's birthday, Kezia worked hard and made a pin cushion. But she didn't have anything to stuff it with. She went into her mother's bedroom and found some sheets of paper on the table. She tore them up and stuffed them into the pin-cushion. The sheets of paper contained her father's speech for Port Authority.
When the father could not find his sheets of paper, he frantically searched for them and went mad with anger. The entire house was searched and the servants were questioned multiple times. But the papers were not found. Finally, mother asked Kezia who innocently told the truth.
Kezia Punished.
Kezia's father became very angry with her. He hit hard on Kezia's palms with a ruler. He also warned her not to touch anything that did not belong to her. Kezia cried a lot that day. She wondered why God made fathers. She started fearing her father even more now.
The Macdonalds
One day, Kezia saw her neighbour, Mr Macdonald playing with his children. They all looked very happy. Kezia's father had never played with her, so she concluded that not all fathers are alike.

She saw that there was a butcher with a knife who was coming close to her and she was unable to move. She uttered a loud cry. Her father came into her room, lifted her and took her to his own bed.
Kezia's Changed in Opinion
Kezia lay beside her father. He told her to rub her feet against his legs to feel some warmth She felt that her father was harder than her grandmother but his hardness felt nice.
