Poem-9

 Fog by Carl Sandberg

A Brief Paraphrase of the Poem

Carl Sandburg has portrayed the nature and its silent working. Top prove his point the poet gives a comparison of the fog and a cat. The fog rolls in over a harbour and city, looking mighty catlike. At first, it's quiet and unsuspecting, like a cat. Then, again very much like a cat, it moves on and either disappears or pounces on another harbour/city. The poet describes the way in which the fog comes to Chicago only for a while and then it retreats. He continues the comparison of the fog with the cat. He says that like a cat, the fog sits on its haunches for a while and looks over the city of Chicago and its harbour.

That the fog should naturally move towards a water body such as the Chicago harbour is no mystery, since fog attracts water particles. However, the fog is not there to stay. As silently and surreptitiously as it had come, it also leaves Chicago soon enough. Hence, even in its retreat, its movement resembles the movement of a cat. That is why the poet's use of this extended metaphor is absolutely appropriate to describe the fog he has seen over Chicago.

Questions and answers

Poetry that does not have an obvious rhythm or rhyme is called ‘free verse’

Answer-No, this poem does not have a rhyme scheme. It is written in free verse.                          Question 6.How does a cat behave?                        Answer:A cat is very quiet. It comes quietly and stealthily on its little padded feet. It sits on the haunches and observes the city and the harbour. Then, it moves on silently without making any noise.                                     Q.7 How does the fog spread over the harbour and the city?

Answer.. The fog-comes to a city stealthily just like a cat. It makes no noise. It spreads over the harbour and the city and settles over them for sometimes. There, it rises high and moves away. In this way the fog arrives over a city, observes it and then leaves it to move away.

Q.8Write the central idea of the poem "Fog".

Answer. The poet Carl Sandburg in his poem 'Fog' describes fog as a cat. Fog is treated to be a living creature. Fog comes quietly and stealthily like a cat Fog sits looking over the harbour like a cat does. Then it moves to settle somewhere else. Just as cat doesn't settle at one place and in the same way fog keeps on moving and finally vanishes

Theme -The main theme in the poem is the beauty and mystery of the natural world.

Q.9. What message does the poet convey through the poem 'Fog'?

Ans. The poet says that the fog which is generally seen during the winter season is coming towards the city and harbour just like a cat. This means that it is approaching the city in a very silent manner so that no one can notice its arrival. He has compared its arrival to that of a cat because a cat always enters a place silently. Next, he says that the fog has covered the whole of the city and harbour and it appears as if it is sitting by folding its legs and looking around just a cat does.
