Q1. How does Toto come to Grandfather's private zoo?

Ans. Grandfather is a pet lover. He has his own private zoo. One day, he sees a monkey tied to a feeding-trough of a tonga. He likes him and buys him from the tonga driver for five rupees. He decides to keep it in his private zoo.

Q2. "Toto was a pretty monkey". In what sense is Toto pretty?


Ans. Toto was physically very pretty. He had bright sparkling eyes beneath deep-set eyebrows. He had pearly white teeth which were very often displayed in a smile. Although, his hands looked dried-up, his fingers were quick and wicked. He also had a tail adding to his good looks, and which also served as a third hand.


Q3. Why does Grandfather take Toto to Saharanpur and how? Why does the ticket collector insist on calling Toto dog?

Ans. Toto does not let the other pets sleep at night comfortably. So, Grandfather decides to take him to Saharanpur. He carries him in a canvas kit-bag. The ticket collector calls Toto a dog because there was a rule that any person travelling with a dog will have to pay for the animal also. There was no such rule for monkey and ticket collector wants to make money by making the grandfather pay for the animal.


Q4How does Toto take a bath? Where has he learnt to do this? How does Toto almost boil himself alive?

Ans. Toto takes a bath like a human being. First, he tests the temperature of water in the bowl. Then he gradually steps into it. He goes neck-deep into the water. Then he rubs himself with soap. He has learnt all this by watching the narrator as monkeys are experts in copying. One day Toto almost boils himself alive while trying to get a bath. He finds a large kettle left on the fire to boil for tea. He removes its lid. He finds the water warm enough for a bath. He gets in with his head sticking out from the open kettle. A little later, the water begin to boil so Toto raises himself to avoid the burning sensation but sits down again since it was cold outside. He hops up and down many times till Grandmother comes and takes him out from the kettle.


Q5. Why does the narrator say, "Toto was not the sort of pet we could keep for long."?

ans. Toto was a naughty monkey. He would spoil things in narrator's home. He would break dishes and spoil clothes. He would tear curtains and wallpaper. When any of the narrator's aunts came near him, he would try to tear a hole in her dress. Hence, it was a costly affair to keep Toto as a pet. So, the narrator says they could not keep him as a pet for long.

Q1. Why was Toto kept in a closet?

Ans. Toto was kept in the closet in the narrator's bedroom, tied to a peg fastened to the wall. This was done to keep his presence a secret from narrator's grandmother. She did not like the habit of her husband bringing animals into her house. She always raised a hue and cry on seeing a new animal.


Q2. What destruction was caused by Toto in the narrator's room?

Ans. Toto was tied to a hook fastened to the wall of the narrator's bedroom. He pulled the hook from the socket by force and set himself free. He tore off the beautiful wallpaper of narrator's room. He also tore the narrator's school blazer into shreds. He proved to be an agent of spoilage and destruction.


Q3.What was the grandfather's reaction after Toto had torn the narrator's blazer?

Ans. The grandfather was not at all angry or upset after that incident. Rather, he seemed happy at that mischief. He said that if Toto had got more time, he would have tied the pieces of blazer into a rope. Then he would have tried to escape out of the window with the help of that rope.

Q4.How did Toto behave when he stayed with other pets?

Ans.Toto was a mischievous monkey. He was not friendly with the other pets of Grandfather. He disturbed the sleep of all other animals at night. He bit the long ears of the donkey, Nana, when he was made to stay with him in the stable. His behavior with other pets was rude and wild.


Q5.How did Toto behave with Nana, the pet donkey?

Ans.Toto was shifted to servant's quarters after the grandmother had accepted him in the family. He was made to stay in the stable with the family's pet donkey, Nana. Toto caught hold of Nana's long ears. He had fastened himself on the long ears of Nana with his sharp teeth. He ill-treated Nana so they never became friends.


Q6.Why was Toto not introduced to grandmother?

Grandmother did not appreciate the introduction of new animals and birds into the Zoo. So, the author and his grandfather decided that they would keep Toto's presence in the house a secret to avoid causing any form of discomfort to her, till the time she was in a good mood to accept him.


Q7. What trouble did Toto cause at lunch-time one day? How did this event prove that Toto was too wild to be kept as a pet?

Ans. Toto was fond of making mischiefs and teasing the family members of the narrator. One day, Grandmother made a large dish of pullao and kept it at the centre of dining table at lunch time. Toto started stuffing himself with pullao. When Grandmother saw this, she shouted at him. Toto did not like this behavior of Grandmother. He threw a plate at her. He didn't stop there and threw a glass of water on the face of one of the aunts who rushed towards him. When Grandfather arrived, he escaped through the window with the dish of pullao. They found him in the branches of a jackfruit tree with the dish in his arms. He stayed there all afternoon and slowly finished the whole rice. In the end, he threw the dish and felt delight when it broke just to irritate Grandmother who had screamed at him. After this incident the family decided that it had enough of the monkey. They were not well-to-do, and could not afford the frequent loss of dishes, clothes, curtains and wallpaper. So, Grandfather found the tonga-driver and sold Toto back to him for only three rupees.

Message -The adventure of toto was written by Ruskin Bond. In this story the theme is to show people that animals who don't have the ability to speak can do all these things which a human can do. They have the qualities to understand. Sometimes they becomes mischievous but they can do things like human.

Theme -The story is based on the experiences of people who keep animals as pets. The theme thus deals with the outcome of the interaction between humans and animals. It shows that not all animals can adapt themselves to the human way of life.
