Description of the Chapter
Bill Bryson presents a funny narrative piece about his clumsy experiences during air travel. Though he is a frequent air traveller, he always gets caught in uncomfortable and comical situations.
Chaos at the Airport
Once the narrator was travelling to England with his family. On reaching Logan Airport, he remembered that he had recently joined British Airways' frequent flyer programme and the card was in the bag he was carrying along. In an attempt to open his jammed zip, he yanked at it so hard that the side flew open, littering all the content outside. The confusion was further created by the narrator when he was more concerned about his spilled tobacco rather than clearing the rest of the mess. He became hysterical at the sight of blood coming out of his finger.
Funny Situation Onboard
He recounts more catastrophic experiences of his travels and writes about how once he bent forward to tie his shoe laces and was pinned down by the person ahead of him who threw his seat into full recline. He could only free himself by clawing the leg of the man sitting next to him.
In another incident, he spilled soft drink on a woman twice sitting next to him. The lady was greatly annoyed by his clumsiness.
His worst experience was when he was writing something and sucking on his pen. The pen leaked without him noticing. After twenty minutes of having spoken to his attractive co-passenger, he went to the lavatory to find out that the leaked ink has smeared his mouth, chin, tongue, teeth and tongue. His mouth has turned navy blue and would remain so for many days.
Hope for a Normal Life
The narrator wants to have a normal life without experiencing any disasters on account of his clumsiness. Now, on planes his wife asks his children to 'take lids off the food for their daddy when he is travelling with his family. When he is alone, he doesn't eat or drink as a precaution. He controls his movement to avoid another spilling accident.
Availing Air Miles
The narrator is always unable to avail his air miles despite being a frequent flyer He either misplaces the card or forgets to ask for it at the time of check-in. Sometimes, he cannot avail of it because there is a difference in his name on his card and on the ticket.
