A Brief Note Of The Chapter
This chapter is a brief biographical outline of Albert Einstein and gives a glimpse of his early life and his contribution to the field of science.
Birth and Childhood
Albert Einstein was born on 14th March, 1879 in Ulm, Germany and no body could see any trace of intelligence and genius of a scientist in him. On the contrary, he was a slow learner who started speaking after he had turned two-and-a-half years old. He was an introvert child who played by himself and loved mechanical toys. So, he was named 'Brother Boring' by his playmates. Once, the headmaster of his school gave a very negative report about him which stated that he would never succeed in any profession. But his mother wished that he should acquire some skill. So, Einstein started to learn the violin at the young age of six as per his mother's advice. He became so interested in this skill that he maintained it for the rest of his life and became a gifted violinist. Later Einstein proved to be a good student as he scored good marks while studying in a school in Munich where Einstein's family had moved when he was 15 months old, But, he loved freedom and felt suffocated due to the stern discipline in his school. He thus left the school in Munich at the age of 15 and went to German-speaking Switzerland to keep up his studies in an open environment.
Further Study
Einstein was extremely intelligent in mathematics and deeply interested in physics. After schooling, he joined the University in Zurich where he fell in love with a Serbian fellow student, Mileva Maric.
Early Jobs and Fame
Einstein could not easily find a job after completing his graduation from the University in 1900. However, he got a job as a technical assistant in a patent office in Bern in 1902. But he continued his own research in physics. In 1905, he published a research paper of 'Special Theory of Relativity' and came out with the formula: E = mc² i.e. Energy = mass x (speed of light).
Marriage and International Fame
Despite his mother's dissent, Albert had finally married Mileva in January 1903, and had two sons. But a few years later, the marriage faltered and the couple finally divorced in 1919. Einstein married his cousin Elsa the same year.
Einstein's new personal chapter coincided with his rise to world fame. He published
his "General Theory of Relativity" in 1915. Einstein's findings were declared a scientific
revolution. He received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921.
His Efforts for World Peace
Einstein moved to America in 1933 when the Nazis came to power in Germany. The discovery of nuclear fission in Berlin caused an uproar. The scientist community was afraid that Nazis could build and use an atomic bomb with this new discovery. Einstein wrote a letter to the American President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, describing the destructive power of a nuclear bomb. In 1945, the Americans secretly developed an atomic bomb and dropped it on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Einstein was shattered by the destruction caused and wrote another letter to the United Nations in which he proposed the formation of a world government. Einstein worked for the cause of peace and democracy for the rest of his life. He was celebrated as a visionary and world citizen as much as a scientific genius at the time of his death. He passed away in 1955 at the age of 76
