Summary

They say faith can move mountains. But what should we put our faith in? This is the question this story delicately poses. Lencho is a farmer who writes a letter to God when his crops are ruined, asking for a hundred pesos. Does Lencho's letter reach God? Does God send him the money?

Lencho's house was the only house in the entire valley and it sat on top of a low hill. He was a hard working farmer whose field of ripe corns always promised a good harvest.

The whole morning, Lencho eagerly watched the sky towards the north east, looking for signs of rain. He was sure that a downpour or at least a shower was necessary for a good harvest. He was hopeful that they were going to get some water. While Lencho was scrutinising the sky, his wife was preparing supper. His older boys were working in the field and the smaller ones were playing near the house. It was during dinner that, as predicted, big drops of rain began to fall from the sky and huge clouds were arriving, bringing fresh and sweet air with it. Lencho ran outside excitedly and when he came inside, he joyfully announced to his family that "these aren't raindrops falling from the sky, they are new coins. The big drops are ten cent pieces and the little ones are five." Lencho was contentedly watching his field of ripe corns getting drenched in rain when a strong wind started to blow and a treacherous hailstorm quickly followed. Ironically, the giant hailstones falling from the sky along with rain resembled big silver coins. This sudden development in the weather worried Lencho a lot and he hoped for the hailstorm to end quickly. However, it ensued for an hour, and finally when it passed, the field was completely covered in white. The whole harvest of corn was ruined, not a flower, not a leaf was left on the plants and trees. A sad and disheartened Lencho stood in the middle of his field, once again examining it and admitted to his sons that "A plague of locusts would have left more than this. This hail has left nothing." Their year long hard work had gone waste. Lencho and his family were left with no corn. They felt helpless and were quite sure that they were going to go hungry this year.

What dwelled in the hearts of Lencho and his family was a ray of hope. God would never let them go hungry and He would certainly help them.

Lencho was a farmer, but he knew how to write. He decided to write a letter to God the very next day. In the letter to God, Lencho wrote about his tragic situation and how his family would go hungry if He didn't help him. Lencho wrote "I need a hundred pesos in order to sow my field again and to live until the crop comes..." Lencho wrote "To God" on top of the envelope and put the letter inside it, placed a stamp on the letter and mailed it.

One of the postmen who came across the letter, was surprised and amused at the same time on seeing to whom the letter was addressed. He took the letter to the postmaster and showed it to him, still laughing heartily. Although the postmaster too laughed at the letter first, a minute later, he was moved by the writer's faith in God. He decided to answer the letter. But soon he realised that the writer needed money to overcome his troubles. The kind and generous postmaster, in order to not shake the writer's faith in God, requested his employees and friends to contribute some money towards the good cause. He himself gave a part of his salary. However, he was unable to raise the entire hundred pesos. He put little more than half of the amount in an envelope addressed to Lencho. He also sent a letter with the money; the letter contained only one word: God.

Lencho visited the post office again the following Sunday. The postman himself handed the letter to Lencho. Happy to have done a good deed, the postmaster watched Lencho receive the letter from his office; Lencho opened the letter immediately.

On counting the money Lencho became angry. Lencho was confident that God could not have sent him less than what he had asked, God could not have made such a mistake.

Still at the post office, Lencho asked for paper and ink, and started scribbling something angrily, put it in an envelope, placed a stamp on it and dropped it in the mail box. At that very moment, the postmaster took Lencho's letter out of the mailbox, opened it and started to read Lencho's second letter to God, "God: Of the money that I asked for, only seventy pesos reached me. Send me the rest, since I need it very much. But don't send it to me through the mail because the post office employees are a bunch of crooks. Lencho."
