        WELL RESCUED

Ulhas Mandlik, 35, a power-loom owner from Ichalkaranji, Maharashtra, and his mother were homeward-bound one evening when heavy rain forced them to take shelter beneath a bridge. Not far away, a small group of labourers huddled together under a part of the cement housing above a 16 metre deep well used to pump water for irrigation.

Suddenly, Mandlik and his mother heard the labourers scream. When the two got to the well, they were told that a five year old boy named Hariya had fallen in through a side opening in the structure. Ignoring his mother's fears. Mandlik quickly knotted together lengths of flunsy rope belonging to the labourers and asked them to lower him into the dark well. "I hope the rope holds," he thought. As he descended, Mandlik noticed the metal rungs on the wall of the well. He grabbed hold of one and started climbing down, when he saw the boy clinging to a pipe running up the well's centre. Grabbing the child, Mandlik started to climb praying that the old rungs wouldn't give away and plunge them both into the churning water below. Their luck held and within a few minutes, Mandlik clambered to ground level and handed over Hariya to his sobbing father.

The man fell at Mandlik's feet and offered him some money as a reward. Refusing the cash, Mandlik took Hariya and his family to a nearby eatery and offered them steaming tea to warm them up. Several organisations have honoured Mandlik for his bravery and presence of mind on that wet day three years ago. "I am happy I was at the right place at the right time," he says," and was able to return a little boy to his family."

              Dreams to Reality

1. The Indian Premier League (IPL) has completely changed the cricket scenario in India. It became very popular after the success of Twenty20 cricket After India won the twenty20 world cup in 2007, Indians became crazy about the format and IPL cashed on that craze. The idea of IPL was initialised by the then BCCI vice president Lalit Modi. It was launched in 2008. It follows the same format as that of English Premier League and the National Basketball League of the US. It works on the American style franchise-based system of hiring players and auctioning the franchisees. IPL has revolutionised the cricketing scene in India. It changed the dynamics of the game and the way the game has been played, watched and marketed.

2. Cricketainment' is the new word to describe the frenzy as cricket got combined with corporate megabucks and Bollywood glamour. It has added glitz and glamour to the game. The most interesting aspect is the valuation and bidding for the players that has never happened before. It has transformed cricket, which is considered as a religion to a cult, in India. Former England Cricket captain lan Botham has branded IPL as "too powerful" for the good of cricket. He believes that IPL should not exist as it is not good for the game in the long-term. "I know this has been modified to a degree, but it is still an imbalance. The IPL is too powerful for the longterm good of the game. Corruption is enough of a problem in itself, but the IPL compounds that problem, given it provides the perfect opportunity for betting and, therefore, fixing," he said. Many feel that IPL has privatized the national passion.

3. IPL focuses more on the business aspect than the actual game of cricket. Cricket teams are more worried about its valuation and how to reach break even. Players are concerned about making money, leading to various cases of match or spot fixing. The players in IPL lack the national spirit of unity. IPL has always been more about controversies than cricket. There have been many cases of corruption and match fixing. Even the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was in conflict with various cricket boards due to the IPL

4. The main reason for the conflict with the International Cricket Council (ICC) is the issue that the players should be available to play matches for their country even if it overlaps the IPL season. There was a controversy regarding the regulation of the IPL ticket prices as the ticket was being sold at exorbitant prices. All these controversies take away the focus from the real game of cricket.

A. Answer briefly the following questions:(2x4=8 marks)

(i) How has IPL. changed the dynamics of Indian cricket?
