1.The peddler thought the world was a rattrap because it offered temptations like wealth, food and shelter, which could trap people just as bait traps a rat.

2.He signed himself as “Captain von Stahle” because Edla’s kindness and respect had transformed him. He wanted to show that he had regained his dignity and honesty.

3.Edla treated the peddler with compassion and respect even after discovering his true identity. Her kindness awakened his conscience and inspired him to return the stolen money.
