Q1. Bill Bryson says, I am, in short, easily confused. What example has he given to justify this?

Ans. The author rightly says that he is easily confused. He goes looking for the lavatory in cinema and ends up in an alley on the wrong side of a self-locking door. He easily forgets his hotel's room number and has to return to the hotel desks many times to confirm his room number.


Q2. What happens when the zip on his carry-on bag gives way?

Ans. On reaching Logan Airport, Boston, Bill Bryson remembers that he has recently joined British Airways' frequent flyer programme and his card is in his carry-on bag. When he pulls the zip of his bag hard, it gets broken. Everything from the bag comes out with force. It includes newspaper cuttings, loose papers, a tin of pipe tobacco, magazines, passport, English money and a film roll. The tobacco spreads all over the area. Bryson also cuts his finger while pulling at the zip. He becomes hysteric seeing his blood.


Q3. Why is his bleeding? What is his wife's reaction?


Ans. Bill gets his finger injured while pulling at the zip. Blood begins to flow from the wound. His wife looks at him in wonder. She shouts at him, saying that it is unbelievable that he does this for a living.


Q4. How did Bryson end up in a 'crash position' in the aircraft?

Ans. Bryson leaned over to tie a shoelace. Just then someone in the seat ahead of him threw his seat back into full recline. The result was that the author found himself pinned in the crash position. He was in great trouble. He could get himself free only by clawing the leg of the man sitting next to him.

Q5.Why are his teeth and gums 'navy blue?

Ans. Once while traveling. Bryson finds an attractive young lady sitting in the next seat and starts chatting with her. In the meantime, he keeps sucking his pen from one of the ends. After about 20 minutes, he goes to the lavatory. There he is shocked to find that the pen has leaked and his mouth, chin, tongue, teeth and gums are now navy blue and would remain so for several days.


Q6. Bill Bryson 'ached to be suave'. Is he successful in his mission? List his 'unsuave ways?


Ans. Bryson did not succeed in his mission to be suave. He always created seismic event on a dinner table. While getting into a car, he would close the door to find that a part of his coat was left outside. He would sit on such things as chewing gum, ice cream, cough syrup and motor oil and would spoil his light coloured trousers


Q7. Why do you think Bill Bryson's wife says to the children, "Take the lids off the food for daddy'?

Ans. The wife knows about the catastrophe her husband creates during his travels. She is aware, that if her husband takes the lids off the food, he may spill something on someone, spoiling their clothes as well as mood. Therefore, she asks the children to take the lid off the food for daddy.


Q8. What is the significance of the title of the story.


Ans. The narrator of the story, who is a frequent traveller, is confused and clumsy during his travels. His clumsiness gets himself into troubles on board and in hotels. He forgets the room number of his hotel. He spills things while extending his hand for a handshake. He sits on things that spoil his trousers. He also forgets to place his frequent flyer card at an accessible place.Therefore, the title is apt as it suggests that the story is about a frequent traveller who gets himself into trouble every time he travels.

Q1. Why does Bill Bryson get filled with wonder?


Ans. Bill Bryson gets filled with wonder by thinking how other people conduct routine activities with each whereas his minor incidents turn into catastrophes. In his confusion, he makes a mess of everything.


Q2. How did the lady sitting beside Bryson get drenched twice?

Ans. During one of his flights, Bryson accidentally spilled a soft drink onto the lap of the lady sitting beside him. The flight attendant being quick, came and cleaned the lady up. She also brought a replacement drink which again he knocked onto her.


Q3. The flight crew go out of their way to ensure the comfort of the passengers? Justify by taking reference from the story 'An Accidental Tourist'.

Ans. During one of Bryson's travels, he spilled a soft drink onto the lap of a lady sitting beside him. The flight attendant quietly came and cleaned her up. She also brought him another drink. This shows how the crew can go out of their way to ensure the comfort of the passengers.

Ans.While checking in at the Logan airport, Bryson remembered that he had recently joined the British Airways' frequent flyer programme. He also remembered that he had kept the card in his carry-on bag that he was carrying around his neck.

Bryson tried to open the jammed zip of his carry-on bag. He yanked at it so hard that the side flew open spilling the contents of the bag on the floor. He was dumbstruck as the myriads of things rained down on the floor.

When the lidless box of tobacco rolled on the floor spilling the tobacco, Bryson cried in horror. He knew that tobacco was costlier in England especially after the budget. He was horrified to realise that it was his monetary loss.


Q7.What were the measures taken by Bryson when he travelled alone?

Ans. Knowing about his clumsy nature, whenever Bryson would travel alone, he would restrict his movement. He would just control his hands from flying out unexpectedly and causing any mischief. He would neither drink nor eat and would never put a pen around his mouth.


Q8. Why was Bryson unable to avail of any frequent flyer miles?


ms. Bryson was never able to avail of any air miles because either he couldn't produce the card on time or forgot to ask for it during check-ins. Also, his name on the card and the ticket would not match.
