A Brief Summary of the Poem
The present poem describes a scene of nature and the effects it has on human mind. The poem opens with dark clouds hovering all over the sky. A gloomy darkness spreads all around. When it starts to rain, the poet compares the rain drops to the tears shed by the darkness. However, the poet finds it blissful to lie in his cozy bed and listen to the patter of the rain falling on the roof.
As the poet listens to the tinkling sound of the raindrops falling on the shingles of his roof, he feels an echo in his heart and many memories of the past begin to hover in his mind, weaving together like a patchwork.
Among the memories is the memory of the poet's mother looking lovingly at her children before leaving them in their bed. The poet says that he can feel the fond look of his mother on him as he listens to the patter of the rain on the shingles.
